NoraTake a break in the Wrinkled Stocking Tea Room

Delicious home-baked hot and cold food, plus speciality cakes, are served at Holmfirth’s famous Wrinkled Stocking Tea Room, named after the famous stockings worn by Nora Batty, star of the world’s longest running TV comedy series Last of the Summer Wine.

And the Wrinkled Stocking Tea Room is appropriately named. For it is right next door to the TV homes of Nora (and previously Compo) used by the BBC in the series. While enjoying a drink and a slice of cake, you might just happen to chance upon a camera crew, and some of the cast, filming the next series.

Even if they’re not filming, you can still feel very much involved in the famous TV programme for the tearoom is adjacent to the popular Summer Wine Exhibition, partially located in what was Compo’s sitting room!

But that’s not the only reason why the Wrinkled Stocking Tea Room is popular with both local residents and visitors from afar.

That comes down to the traditional hot and cold food and speciality cakes home-baked on the premises by proprietors Sue and Chris Gardner. Features on the menu range from Victoria Sponge and Coffee & Walnut Cake to the popular Lemon Drizzle Cake.

The tearoom even has its own specially designed, exclusive crockery, with a Wrinkled Stocking design by Jenny Hinchcliffe, a local artist. These are available for sale.

Visitors also eat and drink in maximum comfort as the tearoom was presented with the Roy Castle Gold Award for a clean, healthy "No Smoking Environment".

Why is the food so delicious? One reason must be the fact that it is created in the premises using traditional home-cooked recipes. The other is that everything is produced and supplied locally, such as Anthony for fruit and veg off the Thursday market, Holmes for milk and eggs, Old Bridge Bakery for teacakes and Longley’s (the famous dairy and yoghurt people) for cream.

The Wrinkled Stocking Tea Room is open six days a week providing a warm and friendly personal service, offering hot and cold refreshments, sandwiches, light lunches, cakes and afternoon teas.

It is an ideal place for a snack or meal, or well-deserved "cuppa", when shopping, or visiting, Holmfirth.
